Architects often joke that many of us started our practices by doing “garage addition” projects. At Bizios Architect we love the opportunities and challenges that such projects present. We have recently completed two additions/renovations that involved improving the quality of life in existing houses by “raising the roof” of the existing garages and adding useful, well-integrated spacious rooms filled with light.
Inspiration comes from J.B. Jackson, a provocative essayist on American culture and its built and natural landscapes. An essay on “The Domestication of the Garage” from his book The Necessity for Ruins and Other Topics, provides great insight on the history and significance of the garage in our contemporary culture. In addition, Kira Obolensky’s book titled Garage: Reinventing the Place We Park provides diverse examples of garages put to all sorts of uses.
