The new owners of this stately home in the desirable Mt. Bolus neighborhood of Chapel Hill wished for a modern kitchen with plenty of room for family cooking and entertaining. A side door entry with mudroom was also part of the program. The design bumped out the corner of the existing first floor to make a large contemporary kitchen and dining area surrounded by windows, connecting the inside to the private backyard and wooded surround. The large central island provides plenty of space for preparing dinner while supervising homework. The decidedly contemporary aesthetic is respectful of the existing structure and comfortably blends old with new.
