French Rowe

Durham, NC

North Carolina vernacular architecture echoes in the simple, gabled form of this highly sustainable home. Its location in a cohousing community where residents actively participate in the neighborhood’s appearance and operation required energy-conscious design and construction. An east-west gable reflects the area’s past while a passive-solar energy system takes advantage of the long southern exposure, earning the owners a state tax credit. Living spaces are infused with natural light from two sides. The design, which includes a screened porch and loft area, maximizes cross-ventilation across the spaces. Natural interior finishes and crisp details provide a tranquil backdrop for the owners’ eclectic mix of furniture, artwork and artifacts.
