Phase 1: Custom Home

A sparsely wooded meadow and rolling farmland gave us the opportunity to create a special retreat that embodies the serenity of country life and participates in the beauty of nature. In addition to the main house, the clients wanted a guesthouse/pottery studio, a gardening hut, a tractor shed, and an outdoor swimming pool. The challenge was to site and design the structures in accordance with the overall plan while working harmoniously with the character of the landscape.

The house is anchored in the site by its placement next to a cluster of trees that also shades its west side in the summer. The forms and materials give the house a sense of timelessness and of belonging to its setting.

Phase 2: Addition / Renovation

Many years after the construction of their Grant Group Architecture (previously Bizios Architect) designed home, the homeowners were ready for a significant renovation/addition – adding a glamorous owners’ suite and expanding the laundry and home office spaces. Their program included a bedroom with a sitting area, a fully accessible bathroom, and increased closet space. Carefully planned views of the beautiful rural property were a high priority. The design solution is a new wing overlooking the swimming pool to the southeast and an ever-changing grove of maples to the west. The light-filled spaces, elegant palette of materials and colors, and a cozy fireplace create a luxurious and relaxing private retreat for the homeowners and their favorite canine companion.

An exterior view of the house shows its grassy surrounding and unique roof form.
