Lake Gaston Retreat

Bracey, VA

A lakeside retreat designed as a gathering place for an extended family is set among trees on a dramatically sloping site. Simple forms, materials, and detailing allow the landscape to remain the focus of the experience. The base of the house is carved into the hillside and is constructed of rough-hewn masonry similar to the rock outcroppings on the site. Wood and glass define light-filled spaces that cantilever outward and open up to the trees and views of Lake Gaston.
