This gem of a building is our second design effort on a vineyard on the Yadkin River.  This gem of a building is our second design effort on a vineyard on the Yadkin River. The two story structure is tucked into the meadow north of the primary residence. It is comprised of an art studio with its own kitchenette and full bath on the upper level and a future barrel cellar on the lower level.

The artist owner had clear wishes for views and quality of light. A wall of window offers treehouse like views into the surrounding woods and glare-free northern light.

Windows on the west and south are shaded by a deep wrap-around porch. By design, the east wall, that faces the vineyard, has only one window (for the bathroom) so the artist can focus on paints and canvases, rather than the demanding labor of the vineyard. The floating approach bridge and porch deck mirror the cantilevered sleeping porch of the main house just across the meadow.

Inside, the simple plywood floor will likely one day be splattered with paint like a Jackson Pollack. The rugged exterior cypress siding reappears on two of the interior walls. The dining areas seems the perfect spot for a tasting of local wines, and a streamlined free standing wood stove assures the studio will be an all season oasis.
